Chapter 14

JAKE OPENED his eyes, his mind reeling from what he’d last heard. But before he had time to worry about it, he looked over at Eric and saw him sitting dazed and silent on the couch, a few tears trailing down his cheeks. Jake brought himself fully back to the present and turned toward Eric. He scooted forward and closed the space between them.

“Come here, baby,” he said without giving it a thought. He pulled Eric toward him, and Eric went willingly. Jake held him close and ran a hand slowly up and down his back. They sat, tangled together, until Eric raised his head from Jake’s chest and looked at him. “What?” Jake asked, tracing Eric’s eyebrow with his thumb.

“You,” Eric said. “It’s incredible. I mean, the fact that you can… and you could never have known her name, or the dessert, or… I just think it’s amazing.”

Jake smiled. “It’s no more amazing than what you do when you sit down to write. It’s just different.”

Eric shrugged and sat up but kept their legs draped over each other. “I can’t even begin to imagine how you….” He trailed off and shook his head.

Jake smiled. “Well, you just wrote a best-seller about the occult. Are you telling me you didn’t research it at all?” Jake gave Eric a gentle poke in the side.

Eric raised one skeptical eyebrow. “You haven’t read it, have you?”

Jake felt his cheeks turn pink, and he shifted his gaze. “Umm, not exactly. Not yet. But I will,” he added quickly.

“You don’t have to read it,” Eric said with a laugh. “It’s just not about this kind of occult. It’s actually a murder mystery more than anything, but there’s a satanic cult that plays a role, so most of my ‘occult research’ focused on that. Nothing like what you do.”

Jake nodded. “I see. Well, I’m definitely not in a satanic cult. And I will read the book.”

“Okay,” Eric said. “Anyway, I’ve come to realize the term ‘occult’ is broader than I originally thought. Or maybe narrower. Maybe this isn’t occult at all.”

“Yeah. Unfortunately, to a lot of people out there in mainstream America, what I do is only a few degrees away from satanic practices,” said Jake.

Eric nodded and they sat quietly for a few moments until Eric broke the silence. “Hey, what was that last part about? The ‘who, me?’ and all that?”

“What?” Jake asked, confused.

“In the reading. At the very end, it was like… I don’t know. You were having a conversation and I only heard half of it.”

Jake sighed and laced his fingers through Eric’s. He hadn’t followed his usual protocol with this reading. If he had, he would’ve asked Eric if he wanted to know absolutely everything before they started. Some people weren’t ready for all a spirit might have to say, and he felt it was his responsibility to give them that choice. He hadn’t asked Eric, though, and he wasn’t sure he was ready to share the very last bit he’d heard.
